March 21, 2023

 Brownstown Staff, Students, and Parents/Guardians:

At the regular meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, March 20, 2023 the Board approved an updated and final calendar for the 2022-2023 school year.  The updated calendar contains some important changes we wish to make you aware of.

Thursday, April 6, 2023 was originally scheduled to be the first day of Spring Break for Brownstown students and staff.  As you know, the District was forced to close on February 23 due to a power outage that left many without electricity for most of the day.  The use of an emergency day means that a day of student attendance would need to be made up somewhere or tacked on to the end of the school year.  After some discussion, the decision was made not to add a day to the end of the school year, but to make up the missed day up on Thursday, April 6, 2023.  This means that Thursday, April 6 will now be an attendance day with a 2:00 early dismissal and the first day of Spring Break will be on Friday, April 7, 2023.

We understand that this is a short notice.  Unfortunately, a decision such as this cannot be made until we feel confident that we are not likely to have any more weather related closures.  We also understand that some families might have travel plans in place for April 6 and, as a result, your student(s) cannot attend that day.  If this is the case, please contact your student’s respective office and the absence will be excused.

Finally, the updated calendar sets the final day of student attendance for Thursday, May 25, 2023 and the final Teacher Institute day for Friday, May 26, 2023.  Though we are confident that we are “out of the woods” in regards to any weather related closures, these final dates are still subject to change based on the use of additional snow days.

As always, we thank you for your understanding and flexibility in situations like these. If you have any questions, please contact the Brownstown Unit Office at 618-427-3355.

 Sincerely,

 Mike Shackelford, Superintendent
