2015 Band and Chorus Fall Concert
This year's fall band and chorus concert took place at 7:30 pm in the St. Elmo High School gymnasium.  The concert featured the fifth, sixth, and seventh grade bands, the high school chorus, and the high school band consisting of students from both Brownstown and St. Elmo. Erick Somodi, the music director, says that a lot of hard work and preparation went into this concert and he was very excited for everyone to hear how well these students play.  Good job to all band and chorus members for another successful concert!

Greenville Choir Festival

Hundreds of voices were ringing on Thursday, February 13th at Greenville College. BHS choir students made the trip to campus to merge together with eleven other school districts for an all day rehearsal. Joining the schools were members of the Greenville College Choir and Chorale. Dr. Jeffrey S. Wilson directed the choirs, preparing and teaching the young singers.

A finale concert was given at 6:30 in the evening for invited guests. The show opened with four songs by the college students. Then, HS choir members joined to perform four pieces. Singers were challenged with new languages, as the song “Ubi caritas” was sung entirely in Latin, “Noel” entirely in the African dialect Kituba, and “Journey Home” partially in Spanish.

Brownstown’s music and band director, Miss Houghtaling, accompanied and assisted teens throughout the day. Students who attended the music festival were Danielle Austin, Jacob Bloemker, Katie Carson, Mathew DuFaux, Kyrstyn Fitch, Kayla Haslett, Hannah Koehler, Nancy McCurley, Sydney Rosborough, Alisa Rush, Mary Schilling, Brittany Siebert, Shawnee Street, and Melissa Wiley.

BHS Band and Choir Program

BES Christmas Program

Every year at the turn of the season the Brownstown Elementary performs a series of songs and skits to honor the Christmas Spirit. The musical will be held on December 16th at 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Grades from kindergarten to sixth performed two carols each that night. The work presented was choreographed and directed by Ms. Houghtaling.

Ms. Houghtaling had been practicing with her music students since the first week in November and continued doing so until the night of the performance. The sixth graders were assigned speaking parts that lead into their class's song. This years theme was "Inside the North Pole" and revolved around elves, reindeer, and other things you could find at the North Pole. Your children have been working extremely hard so don't forget to come and watch them sing and dance in tonight’s Christmas Program!

Veterans' Day Musical

"Letters Home" A Veterans' Day Musical

posted 8 minutes ago by Travis Redden

The special day for the millions of veterans in the United States is approaching quickly. To honor those who served, the Brownstown Music Department will be presenting a musical on Friday, November 8, in the high school gym. Both the choir and the band have been rehearsing for weeks, preparing for the big day. A performance will be given at 9:00 am, then later that evening at 7:00 pm.

The musical will follow the story of a mother's journey through a book of letters from times of war while her son is deployed. Also, there will be a salute to recognize veterans during the program. Both performances are open to the public; family, friends, the community, and especially war veterans and active members are encouraged to attend. There is no cost for either presentation, although donations are appreciated. Everyone is welcome!

Please contact Kendra Houghtaling, director, with any questions by calling the office at (618) 427-3839.

BHS Band and Flag Corps

posted Oct 15, 2013, 7:25 AM by Travis Redden   [ updated Oct 31, 2013, 7:19 AM ]

BHS would like to send out a big congratulations to the band and flag corps on their performance this past weekend at Vandalia. Miss Houghtaling was proud to say that they performed better than she could ever ask for. She said to them the day before, "it didn't matter whether we came in first or last as long as they all gave their best." She also stated that the students have been marching for a while now and have never been more in sync than they were that day. There were three different categories that the schools were classified under: class AA, class A. and exhibition, Brownstown falling in class A.  BHS competed with two other schools, Ramsey and Altamont.

Brownstown placed first overall in class A and also received class A outstanding color guard. We hope to see the band and flag corps group pull through with another solid performance in the upcoming Halloween parade in Vandalia on Thursday, October 24. Good luck to all the band and flag corps students in their upcoming performances.
