Handicapped Swing Set

With the new school year soaring in you might have noticed a difference in the playground. Old swing sets and the little barn where elementary kids would spend all recess have been replaced with new swing sets. You may have noticed a different looking swing on the west side of the playground as well. That swing was put up for the handicapped children to allow them to have some fun at recess too.

The principle at the elementary school, Mrs. Reeter, says that all students, kindergarten through sixth grade, use the new swings. There are 202 students enrolled at the elementary this school year. The money used to purchase the swings, shipping, installation, and landscaping was all paid by the SCC, our parent group. Mrs. Reeter said they had one parent, Don Bloemker, volunteer to take a semi and pick up the swings in Missouri. The Barker family was paid to install the swings, haul and add rock, and landscape.

Mrs. Reeter feels like the school makes any accommodations necessary to adapt to students with disabilities. The elementary school is wheelchair accessible on all four sides of the building. Mrs. Reeter and the faculty are happy that students with disabilities will also be able to enjoy the new swings along with the other children.
