The 2014-2015 season has been a great one for the SEB High School Cheerleaders. They had tryouts in April of 2014 and have practiced throughout the summer and fall to create cheers for the basketball games, and to invent a 3 minute routine consisting of jumps, tumbling, stunting, and a cheer to perform at competitions.
The cheerleaders have traveled across Southern Illinois to competitions at Mt. Vernon where they received 3rd place and qualified for ICCA (Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association) state. At the Edwardsville competition they received 2nd place. Over Christmas break on January 3rd the cheerleaders went to Springfield to compete and received 15th place out of the entire state of Illinois! The cheer squad also received 1st place in the annual St. Elmo Holiday Tournament for the second year in a row, and for the 4th consecutive year Coach Deb Hunter led her squad to win the tournament. The cheerleaders will contend in the IHSA sectionals on January 31st in a chance to go to IHSA state. From this competition judges will only accept the top five from each varsity division.
I had a chance to talk with coach Deb Hunter from St. Elmo-Brownstown Athletics and she stated, “I am looking forward to the IHSA competition on January 31st and to enjoying the rest of the basketball games we have left. There have been too many injuries, but the younger girls have really stepped up and worked hard. Also, the seniors have done an amazing job filling in as needed. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings us!” Please come and support the high school basketball players and cheerleaders at our future home games. See you on the court!by Shayla Stokes
