Brownstown Elementary School was accepted for the St. Louis Cardinals Doin’ it Right Program for the 2014-2015 school year. Mrs. Buscher took the initiative to apply for the program which was 50 minutes in length and included a video presentation with recorded messages from Cardinal players. On Tuesday, March 3rd this cost free program came to BES by the courtesy of Fox Sports Midwest. This elementary-designed program helps students to focus on important choices in life. The Cardinals Organization advertised “Don't do drugs! Stay in school! Participate in sports and stay fit!”
Fredbird and Al Hrabosky delivered the presentation with a mixture of comedy and seriousness. Fredbird cracked jokes by messing with the Mad Hungarian during the presentation which brought laughter and smiles throughout the entire gymnasium. Al Hrabosky gave personal narratives of past friends that were tempted by drugs and lost their lives or baseball careers because of it. He also talked up the importance of a good education and regular exercise.
“I am always impressed with how well the program is organized” says Mrs. Buscher. "This program does so much more than any lesson I could teach and it keeps their attention!-Go Cards!" The students get a chance to be entertained while also learning important life lessons. Bill Haller, American league Major League Umpire, was also at the presentation. Elementary teacher Sandra Stine was lucky enough to have Fredbird, Al Hrabosky, and Bill Haller all sign her bat.
It is so exciting to see a sea of Cardinal red when the student body wears their baseball gear to support the St. Louis team. See the photo albums from the program below taken by teacher Sandra Stine. The Brownstown School district would like to thank the Cardinals organization for their time and great program. We all hope to see them again real soon!
