The St. Elmo/Brownstown High School Girls Softball team is gearing up for the 2016 season. Preseason conditioning and hitting took place for three weeks before the first official regular season practice started on February 29. The girls have been focusing on the game, setting season and personal goals, and are taking on the season with a big hit. Coach Tom Fedrigon looks forward to this softball season, like every other season, because he loves working with the athletes, teaching the game and competing. He loves teaching these athletes that sports parallels life. Benefits of hard work, accepting both victory and defeat graciously, and not being satisfied with anything less than your best effort, are assets that can be carried over into the real world for a successful and happy life.

Coach Fedrigon believes that this team has great team speed as a whole; speed being their biggest strength. The athletes are a hardworking group that is very attentive and receptive to instruction. He also believes that they will not have much trouble offensively because they can swing the bat very well and are a very smart team. A weakness of the team is that there are a lot of athletes with very little game experience at the high school level, with many upcoming freshman, and returning players that haven’t played since junior high seasons. He says that they will need to step up the defensive level from last year to achieve the team goals they are after.

The team goals include that they learn about softball and about life. Secondly, they plan to win the Egyptian Illini Conference and finish in the top four of the National Trail Conference. Lastly, he hopes we learn the benefits of unity and teamwork. Coach Fedrigon also expects this team to be able to battle for the IHSA Regional title. He is proud of the effort that the girls have put forth in their first week of practice, and believes that the momentum and effort will keep growing throughout the season. Fedrigon has had coaching experience at the high school level for eight years. Also this season we have gained a new assistant coach, Elise Asher. Coach Fedrigon and Coach Asher are really impressed with how the practices have been going thus far and are ready to see us bring it to the field at our first game on Tuesday, March 15th at Flora High School.
