St. Elmo Band Program

Due to the cuts at Brownstown Jr./Sr. High last year, band is now under the direction of Mr. Erick Somodi at St. Elmo High School. Students leave BHS at the end of 4th hour and return at the end of 5th hour daily. Positive changes for BHS students include more participation in parades. St. Elmo band is scheduled to attend five parades this school year, including the St. Peter Prairie Days parade, St. Elmo Labor Day parade, Greenup parade, and the Oblong parade. St. Elmo band also performs a winter concert, spring concert, a prism concert, and plays pep band in between the basketball games as well as halftime.

Brownstown is looking to continue what teacher Kendra Houghtaling started a few years ago. Brownstown Marching Band started marching once again in 2012 where they marched in the Vandalia Halloween parade. The following year they marched in the Vandalia Halloween parade again as well as another Vandalia parade where they received first place overall in class A and first place class A in Outstanding Color Guard. Brownstown, like St. Elmo, also did a winter concert, a spring concert, and had a pep band for the basketball season. However, Brownstown performed a Veterans Day Musical as well. The St. Elmo band definitely has more students in band than the music classes we’ve had here in Brownstown, which will give us a wider range of music to play. The students as well as Mr. Somodi hope to see the community come and enjoy the music at our parades, concerts, and pep band games. The year is already off to a great start and students are enjoying the new teacher, making new friends, the new music, and all the marching we’ve done. St. Peter Prairie Days parade was a solid performance, and we’re all excited for our next parade in St. Elmo on Monday September 7.
