Every year juniors and seniors from Brownstown and local area schools are given the opportunity to take a class of their choice at Okaw Vocational Center in Vandalia. Okaw gives students the opportunity learn real-life skills, obtain a certification, and earn college credit. The classes include: Ag Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Auto Body, Commercial Arts, Culinary Arts, Health Occupations, Welding, Building Trades, and Justice Corrections. Okaw has a variety of  options and is a great way to jumpstart a career.

One of the many classes, culinary arts is a class for students who are wanting to become a chef or any other profession concerning culinary arts. Throughout the year students are taught simple skills in becoming a good chef. They are also taught sanitation and kitchen safety. This year at foods, they are going to be taking a course that will give them their food handler’s card, which is a card that will be soon mandatory in the state of Illinois to handle and serve food in restaurants.

Mrs. Perkins has incorporated common core into the lesson plan by having the foods 2 students teach the incoming students lessons such as learning to cut, sanitation, how to make cookies, and how to store food. With this students will learn more by interacting with one another. It is a great way for the students to become friends and be able to work together. All in all, the class has a lot to offer and the students seem to be excited about the events that will happen later in the year.
