Lakeland College Trip

posted Apr 10, 2017, 7:27 AM by School Publications

On March 29th Anatomy, Biology II and Chemistry classes from Brownstown High School took a trip to Lakeland College where the students visited the cadaver, health, and dental laboratories and toured campus.

Our first stop was the cadaver laboratory. If you plan to earn a degree in nursing or take any biology classes at Lakeland you may experience this as a part of your future curriculum. Here we examined a cadaver while the teacher went through and identified each organ. Once we were done in the lab, students attempted to correctly place “organs” into a dummy.

Next we visited the nursing lab. The classroom was set up like a hospital scene with dummies lying in the beds. This is where the students practice before performing on a real person. Some of the dummies could talk, sweat, bleed and even perform a birth, which is pretty neat!

A student ambassador took us on a tour of the college and we also had Q & A time with more student ambassadors. The students informed us on the college life and what it’s actually like be a full-time student. They talked about how important it was to be involved with the college and different clubs such as student government, agriculture, art club, theater club, the industrial technology association and many more!

Our very last stop was the Dental Hygiene Clinic. This program is designed to provide the students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a career as a Registered Dental Hygienist. The clinic offers students a wide variety of patient treatments and experiences. Skills that focus on patient education, prevention of oral diseases and dental hygiene treatments are emphasized. We learned about many parts of the process including medical history, extra/intra oral                                                                                         assessment, dental charting, x-ray films, fluoride treatments, and study models.

We would like to thank Mrs. Wakefield for allowing us to take a trip and Lakeland College for taking the time out of their busy day to show us around.
