How many distinct real solutions does the equation 5x squared + 5 = 10x have? What is histology the study of? Do you know the answers to these questions? Neither do I, but if you are curious you would find the answers at a Brownstown Junior High School Scholar Bowl match. When asked if being smart is a requirement to be a scholar bowl player, Coach Nicole McCown replied “It depends on your definition of smart. I believe every person is “smart” in their own way.” The categories are endless with math, English, history, science, and even entertainment, and every player has their strengths and weaknesses in each category. Miss McCown believes that hard work, and the team’s ability to really enjoy the game are the biggest strengths of the squad.
Kyzara Hissong leads the team as a seventh grader, which shows that one weakness of the group is their young age. With no eighth graders on the team, the upper level questions are difficult. Regardless of the difficulty of the questions, Coach McCown just hopes they learn something from every match they participate in, and expects them to show up and work hard. This is Miss McCown’s first year of teaching math and coaching at BHS, in fact she minored in coaching at Indiana State University. Although she did not play scholar bowl in high school, she did play volleyball and softball,so she understands the fundamentals of a team and hard work. The team and Coach McCown take it day by day and they are learning as they go. She expects to see a great effort at regionals on April 30th.
