Every year seniors begin the search for scholarships and grants. Brownstown High School’s guidance counselor Mrs. Hardiek has chosen several major scholarships her seniors apply to every year. One of the many choices is the VFW Voice of Democracy contest that gives students a chance to win up to $30,000. The competition makes one think critically about our past, present, and future. This year’s 2014 VFW contestants have been given the topic of "Why I Am Optimistic about Our Nation’s Future" and need to have their papers written and recorded by November 1st.

Mrs. Hardiek visited the seniors and gave a few important tips on how to write an effective paper. You should add something personal to your paper, and use memorable quotes to make your essay interesting. Using proper grammar techniques, and adding lively verbs and adjectives will help to capture your reader’s attention. The concept of the contest is to make your opinions heard and to set yourself apart from others. One person from BHS will win $250 to $500 for their optimistic view of America’s future.
