A Lesson about the FDA

Twenty years ago Brownstown High School teacher Mr. Randy Sasse discussed the meat packaging industry in his U.S. History class which prompted a student to bring something interesting, a can of potted meat mixture from the Armour Company.  Students learned about how the FDA formed after President Roosevelt read a book called “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair, which allowed people to read about the atrocities that took place within the industry.  Mr. Sasse still has the can in his possession.  He proceeds to show this to his U.S. History classes every year and will open the packaged meat outside for his students to see during his last year of teaching.  As Mr. Sasse has aged without an expiration date, so has that can of meat.
